For me, becoming a SAHM is not by choice. I came to the States to be with my DH and being new to the place, we have no one but ourselves to rely on and having someone we don’t personally know to take care of our first born is definitely a big no no. So, the only option we had was for me to give up my career and stay home. Yes, staying home to take care of my child is probably the best thing I have ever done for my family and myself, but do I really want to be a SAHM for the rest of my life? I have doubts.

Being a SAHM means we are sacrificing our financial independence by quitting our job and that also means we become very vulnerable to many things such as divorce, unemployment/sickness/death of our husband who is the breadwinner of the house. Unless I’m born with a silver spoon in my mouth, the thought of my children and I having to depend so much on my DH (financially), will sometimes scare the hell out of me.

Having said that, I don’t think I want to be a FTWM too. I don’t like having anyone (except myself/DH) to take care of my children, not even if the caregiver is the grandparents of my children. My DH and I should be the one to decide how we want our children to be brought up. I have seen how difficult it is for my sisters to discipline their children or educate them according to what they want because their children are being care for by my parents. No doubt my parents are the best caregivers my sisters would ever find, but like any grandparents, they can be overly-protective and overindulging the grandchildren at times. In order to keep the “peace and harmony” in the family, I guess my sisters must have “zipped their mouths” quite a bit even when they didn’t agree on how my parents handled their children. :P

For these reasons, I want to be a Work-From-Home-Mom (WFHM). Not only do I get to earn some money (though not a lot), I am always around for my child(ren) and taking care of her(them) by myself. I also feel happier because I’m not entirely dependent on my husband and knowing that I can always return to the workforce (to work full time) one day if I want to. Until today, I still can’t believe how lucky I am to have found a job that allows me to work from home and taking care of my family at the same time. It is the best choice and definitely doable with some time management involved. :)
