childhood food meme
Thought I have escaped an “arrow”from her, but in the end I still got tagged by her.
1. White Rabbit brand’s milk caramel candy (大白兔奶糖)
My sisters and I don’t usually snack and we don’t particularly like to eat candy. So, my mom doesn’t buy any candy for us when we were young. We only eat this candy during Chinese New Year at our relatives’ house and sometimes my grandfather would give some to us when we visit him. Frankly speaking, I don’t really like milky caramel because I hate the way it sticks to my teeth but because this candy has special rice paper cellophane that dissolves in the mouth, which I love eating. I love tearing the rice paper cellophane out and put it in my mouth then wait for it to melt slowly. When I am done with it, I will gobble up the milk candy as fast as I can but most times I will just throw away the leftover candy because I really didn’t like stickiness of the candy.
2. Twisties
We used to stay next to a Gek-Lai-Tiam (provision shop), so whenever we had extra pocket money, my sisters and I would indulge and get a small pack of Twisties at $0.25 to share among ourselves. If I am back in Singapore, I can usually find a pack of the Twisties in my parents’ house because my 2nd sister still loves eating this and I will happily “steal” some from her when she is not at home. Not that my sister would mind me eating but somehow I felt the “stolen” Twisties tastes better.
Ha-ha.
3. Glico’s Pocky Chocolate Sticks
I remember its TV advertisement showing a sweet Japanese girl eating the Pocky stick and said something “Pocky Pocky…murmur murmur… Staw-be-lly and cho-ko-let”.
I love Pocky. It got the savory crunch of a biscuit and the smooth velvety flavor of chocolate. Because it was very expensive and money was quite tight then, my sisters and I only get to eat it once in a while and we had to share it equally among us. I usually would try to eat my share very slowly and stretch as long as I could to eat the sticks. Ha-ha.
4. Birdseye Fish Fingers
My mom is a stay-at-home mom too, so she would always cook nutritious food for us. We rarely get the chance to eat any processed food and if we do, it is because my parents are away. One funny childhood memory I will always remember is that, one day we only had 3 fish fingers left to share among the 4 of us. So, to share “equally”, my brilliant second sister brought out a ruler and started making measurement and cutting. Finally, everyone was happy because each of us got our tasty ¾ stick of the fish fingers to enjoy.
We were really young then, I think I was probably 6-7 years old then.
5. Myojo Instant Noodles
My all time favorite instant noodles! For the same reason as #4, we seldom get to eat instant noodles when we were young. By the time we were big enough to handle the stove, my mom did not stop us from cooking the noodles. But because she cooks ALL the time and our meals were served so regularly, where got chance to snack on Myojo noodles? But once in a while, I would crave for the noodles (we don’t have the habit of eating supper) and would start cooking for myself. Then the hungry “free-riders” in my house (read: my sisters and my dad
) would suddenly appear with extra few packs of the noodles for me to cook too. Ha-ha.
3 people I’m tagging to do this meme:
Mamajojo, Felicia, Mamabok
PS: To these 3 mommies, if you are not free or not in the mood to do it, its ok not to do this meme.
Have fun!

Post Remarks : I just read 5xmom’s childhood food meme entry and I suddenly realize that the one I really love eating since I was little and miss eating now is the Nestum family cereal!! I have the exact same way of eating the cereal like her, except instead of using condense milk, i used Nespray’s (spelling?) full cream milk powder. I like the thick, creamy and goey Nestum cereal. It tastes so heavenly. Too bad, I can’t seem to find the Nestum cereal here in US. Why must I stay in this kind of “鸟不生蛋的地方″? Ptooi! -_-
